Assessment of the expected wind load
The wind load that a tree is exposed to has a decisive influence on tree-statistics calculations. For calculation of the stability and safety against fracture of a tree, initial evaluation of the maximum wind loads (i.e. assuming hurricane-like wind conditions) that are applied to the tree is required.
TSE integrates the following tree-specific and topographic factors for calculation of the expected wind loads:
- Top sail surface and its load centre (for this, use of an appropriate computer programme, e.g. ArWiLo, is required)
- Aerodynamic behaviour of the tree top (Cw value)
- Frequency factor (considers the oscillation willingness of the tree)
- Terrain factor (includes wind-decelerating topographic conditions, e.g. roughness of the ground)
- Squall factor (represents the influence of wind-enhancing effects and turbulences, e.g. street canyons)
- Air pressure
In compliance with the rules of DIN 1055, TSE connects the various influence factors of wind loads on trees and as a result provides a theoretical maximum wind load acting at the load centre. This load is then included as comparative value in further calculations for stability and safety against fracture.
